The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 and through to November 6, may be included depending on where it os celebrated.

It is most widely observed in Mexico, where it originated, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

The holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events and anecdotes about the departed.

The most widely recognised symbol of The Day of the Dead is the Sugar Skull (calavera), a brightly decorated skull shape which might be made from anything from ceramic, plastic or papier mache but most commonly it is made using a mould from sugar.

Due to it's proximity to Halloween, the sugar skull has been adopted as a Halloween decoration in many countries where the Day of the Dead is not traditionally celebrated.

The traditional greeting for the day is "Happy Day of the Dead" or in Spanish "Feliz Día de los Muertos".
