Star Wars is an American epic space opera media franchise created by George Lucas which began with "Star Wars" in 1977 and quickly became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon.
It quickly made stars of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. and is so much loved that it has a whole day dedicated to it - the 4th May is known as Star Wars Day!
Star Wars is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. The original 1977 film, was followed by the sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
Lucas later returned to the series to write and direct a prequel trilogy, consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002), and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005).
Taken over by the Disney corporation in 2012 his led to a sequel trilogy, consisting of Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017), and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Since that first release in 1977 it has be loved by young and old alike.
The franchise has been expanded further with the TV series The Mandalorian, live action anthology films Rogue One and Solo, The Clone Wars animated series, Three new Star Wars films have been announced which will be set during the dawn of the Jedi, along with a Mandalorian movie in 2026 and Star Wars: Starfighter which is expected in 2028.
