The school year starts at different times of the year depending on what country that you live in. In the northern hemisphere most school years begin as summer ends and we head into autumn in late August or early September, while in the southern hemisphere, summer ends in January or February and so for many, the school year begins then.
In both cases this is timed to coincide with the end of the hottest part of the year and the end of harvest - originally planned so that the kids can help with the harvest before going back to school. In the many countries that do not follow this pattern, the school year is usually planned around avoiding the hottest parts of the year.
