Easy Elf On The Shelf Free Scarf Knitting Pattern

It’s great fun dressing up your Elf on the Shelf during December, isn’t it?
It’s a brilliant way to change up your Elf, especially if you are all out of ideas for places to move your Elf to.
For more fun, why not make him a special unique garment yourself?
That is why I’ve put together this super-easy, make-it-in-an-evening Elf On The Shelf scarf knitting pattern.
The pattern is pretty flexible and it’s a great stash-buster if you have lots of odds and ends of yarn. And it is made in a simple garter stitch.
This version used only 8 grams of 100% wool double knitting yarn and I chose to knit it quite tightly. You could knit it a bit looser and it would grow faster and could use even less yarn.
Elf on the Shelf Easy Scarf Pattern
You will need about 10 grams of knitting yarn. Scarf patterns are very tolerant and flexible, so just use whatever you have hanging around in your stash.
- Double knitting or 4 ply yarn. Anything heavier than double knitting probably won’t work for something this small. US knitters will find sport weight works fine for this.
- I used 3mm needles which is a US size 2.5 or (UK size 11 if you have inherited a collection of knitting needles from an older relative). Use whatever you are comfortable with. A good rule of thumb is to use size 3mm-4mm with double knitting yarn, and 2.75mm-3.5mm with four ply.
- Cast on 6 st if using DK yarn, or 8 stitches if you’re using 4ply
- Knit every row for as long as you like. The scarf in the picture is just over 30cm or 12” long which is quite long enough. Try it on your own elf and use your own judgement.
- Cast off and sew in the ends.
You don’t have to make the scarf as plain as I have!
I chose a nice festive green, but any colour works at Christmas, doesn’t it? For more colour use a variegated yarn, or make stripes by alternating two different colours of yarn every 4 or 8 rows.
Now, doesn’t he look nice and cosy!
