International Talk Like A Pirate Day
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parody holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon.
They proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate (that is, in English with a stereotypical West Country accent).
Although it was started as a joke between the two friends, thanks to the power of the internet, the day became known around the world.
There is even an official website of International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Now this joke holiday, celebrated annually on 19th September, has become an excellent excuse to take part in lots of pirate-themed silliness, from dressing up in pirate costume, taking part in pirate themed events and of course saying "Arrggh!" and "Jim Lad!" a lot.
Ideas For Celebrating Talk Like A Pirate Day
Anything related to pirates is fair game on 19th September!
- Dress up as a pirate.
- Read a pirate themed book such as Treasure Island, Peter Pan, The Princess Bride, Jamaica Inn or Frenchman's Creek.
- Fly a pirate flag for the day.
- Watch a pirate themed movie, for example any of the Pirates of the Carribean films, Hook, The Goonies, Muppet Treasure Island, The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists or aany movie adapted from a classic pirate tale.
- Discover Gilbert & Sullivan's classic operetta The Pirates of Penzance. Full of well-known tunes, it is the tale of a band of hopelessly incompetant pirates and their loyal apprentice Frederic.
