Grab your needles and your wool, because Worldwide Knit in Public Day is held on the second Saturday of June, and it is a chance for knitters around the world to let everyone how much they love to knit!

Worldwide Knit in Public Day, or WWKIPDAY for short, was first held in 2005. Originally founded by Danielle Landes, since 2011 it has been organised by Danish knitter Astrid Salling. It's motto is "better living through stitching together".

In 2024 WWKIPDAY is on Saturday 8th June.

In 2025 WWKIPDAY is on Saturday 14th June.

However WWKIPDAY is not a formal event, and anyone can organise an event wherever they live.

It is all about community and making friends with other knitters. But if you want to take part and don't know any other knitters, that's OK - you can just take your knitting outside and knit in a park, on a bench, in your front garden, deep in the forest - wherever you like!

Or maybe you could get your needles out in your local shopping mall, on a bus or train, library, the pub or your favourite cafe.

If you are organising an event you can list it on the World Wide Knit In Public Day Official Facebook Page to make sure that everyone knows about your get-together, plus you can see if there are any events near you.

5 Tips For Knitting In Public

If you want to knit in public you can just take your current project with you can settle down for a good knit. But if it is your first time knitting in public and you are a bit unsure of what to do here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Start small. Small projects such as socks, hats and gloves are much easier to carry around with you than the back of a jumper! You could also try knitting squares for charity or have a go at making one of these hand warmer patterns.
  2. Knit on circular needles - that way you won't drop your needles on the ground or find that you've left one on the bus!
  3. You'll need to find something to carry your project around in to keep it clean and stop the yarn from tangling. A plastic or paper bag is fine, but a cotton drawstring bag similar to these, which are intended as reusable vegetable bags, I find works really well.
  4. If you knit outdoors there is the possibility that your knitting will become dirty from such things as pollution, weather, food and drink spills. Even if you don't usually block your knitting you may want to carefully wash your garment before you wear it.
  5. Remember to take your pattern too - it is SO frustrating to realise it is time to do some shaping but you've got no pattern. Photograph your pattern on your phone so that it will always be close at hand.
