May Day, the first of May, is celebrated all over the world, as a festival to celebrate the arrival of mayday. It is thought to have developed form the celtic festival Beltane or the festival of Walpurgis Night which is celebrated in many parts of Europe.

It is traditionally marked with raucaous celebrations including music, dancing, parades, traditional Morris Dancing, Maypole Dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. The May Queen is a young girl who is crowned queen for the day and may lead the May Day Parade.
May 1st is a public holiday in many countries, or the nearest Monday to May 1st may be chosen as a public holiday.
