Lauren Child, 10th Waterstones Childrens Laureate

Lauren Child, the bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of the Charlie and Lola books, has today been named the tenth Waterstones Children's Laureate at a cermony in Hull, which is the 2017 City of Culture. She will be the Waterstones Children's Laureate 2017-19, and takes over from author and illustrator Chris Riddell.

Lauren Child is best known as the artist and author-illustrator of the hugely popular Charlie and Lola books, which have been made into a TV series shown on CBeebies and around the world.

She is also the author of the Clarice Bean picture books and Ruby Redfort novels,

Lauren Child has stated that as part of her laureateship:-

"I want to inspire children to believe in their own creative potential, to make their own stories and drawings and ignite in them the delight of reading for pleasure."

"In an increasingly fast-paced  world, children  need  the  freedom to dream and  imagine; to enjoy reading, drawing  and telling their own stories without value judgement or restrain."

Previous Children's Laureates also include Quentin Blake, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen, Julia Donaldson and Malorie Blackman.
