To Fly Or Not To Fly?

It’s that time of year again. Where to go on holiday and the big dilemma - to fly or not to fly?

Anyone with a young family knows that jumping on a plane to a foreign country is rarely the beginning of the relaxed holiday that you might have planned; there’s the interminable 3 hour pre-flight check-in time, the balancing of 5 suitcases, a pram and car seats on a trolley and making sure Billy, Freddie and Rose don’t wander off whilst in the seemingly endless queue.  Once you’re on the plane you may have the grumpy pensioner turning round and glaring as excited Freddie kicks the back of the chair for the umpteenth time. After eventually picking up the hire car in the early hours of the morning, without the translation book that you’ve left behind, Rose complains that she is going to be sick.  It’s then that realise you have forgotten to pack the medicine box as well. Is it all coming back to you?

Not forgetting the carbon footprint issue with the flight. And with the strength of the Euro everything becomes so much more expensive. No more the cheap food and booze abroad.

Mumtrepreneurs Joanne Elliott and Helen Barker have discovered that you don’t have far to travel to discover that actually the UK and Ireland has some gems of places to stay with children. Hence the launch of ‘Away with the Kids’ (www.awaywiththekids.co.uk), a website specialising in child friendly family accommodation. “We realised that the best holidays are those recommended by your friends and family preventing a ‘hit and miss’ holiday.  That was the initial concept behind the website”, says Joanne.

Away with the Kids lists a fabulous array of places to stay in the UK and Ireland, ranging from camping in tipis or staying in a luxury 5 star spa hotel.  There are lots in between, importantly to suit different budgets.  All places aim to ensure that you have a fabulous family time - even if you do need spare wellies and a mac in the height of summer!  So pack up the car, hop on a train, get on a bus knowing that the impact of your holiday on the environment will be much less than that stressful flight you may have taken and enjoy our beautiful countryside, cities and beaches.
