21st Century Mums
– Which One Are You?

Psychotherapist and lifecoach Christine Webber has described seven types of mums for Uncle Ben's, drawn from observation, anecdotal comment and surveys in which she has been involved. Which type are you? Note down the letter of your answer to each of these questions.

  1. Do you read nutritional labels on any ready made sauces or meals that you buy?
  1. Always
  2. Sometimes
  3. Rarely
  4. I should but I’m usually in too much of a hurry
  5. Never
  6. I try not to buy ready-made foods
  7. Occassionally in my own creations – life’s too short!
  1. Where do you get most of your meal ideas from?
  1. Recipe books
  2. I try to fit food to various festivals and occasions throughout the year
  3. Magazines, but rarely get round to putting ideas into practice
  4. In the supermarket or food hall
  5. I give my kids what they want
  6. Jamie Oliver, James Martin and Nigella
  7. From years of experience
  1. Do your meal choices vary according to the time of year?
  1. Yes, I do more shepherd’s pies and casseroles in the winter
  2. Yes, according to what I can find to celebrate
  3. Not really
  4. Yes, I buy a lot of pre-packaged salads in the summer
  5. No, the kids have the same taste all year round
  6. Yes, we do lots of barbecuing in the summer
  7. No, we’re just trying out new cuisines
  1. What sort of convenience foods do you most like using?
  1. I like to try good quality ready-made sauces that add variety to chicken or pasta meals
  2. Anything that ties in with a particular festival such as Chinese New Year
  3. Ones that have healthy ingredients so long as the kids will eat them
  4. Whatever I can get quickly when I pop into the food hall or supermarket
  5. Anything the kids like
  6. Healthy options that don’t have too much fat, sugar or salt in them
  7. Ones that give me great tasting food and that I can add to my own recipes
  1. Do you expect your children to be adventurous and try foods they wouldn’t usually sample?
  1. Yes – I want my children to have a varied and interesting diet and to see food as a social event as well as just ‘fuel’
  2. Yes – and I find they will try things if we are celebrating something about people from other cultures or countries
  3. I’ve given up on that
  4. I like them to try new things but don’t insist on it
  5. No
  6. Definitely. I think that healthy, varied food is a constant adventure
  7. I’ve got no control over what my kids eat anymore!
  1. What do you find most difficult about feeding your family?
  1. I can’t really think of anything
  2. Having to cook when I’d sooner spend more time with the children
  3. When they go through stages of only being prepared to eat one thing
  4. No time to cook from scratch
  5. Other people telling me I should try to get them to eat healthier stuff
  6. When they want to choose unhealthy options just because that’s how some of their friends eat
  7. It’s not difficult anymore. I’m having much more fun with food now

Online Grocery Shopping
Most of the major supermarkets offer a delivery service now, but is it a gimmick or a genuinely helpful service for parents? I had thought it was a bit of a luxury, until, stuck at home with a very poorly child, I realised I had no food in the house and no way of getting out to a shop.

Splat Cooking –Encouraging Kids to Get Cooking
It was a request from her daughter for a cooking party for her 5th Birthday Party that set Beverley Glock on the road to forming Splat Cooking, a Buckinghamshire-based business providing cooking parties and funky cooking equipment.

The Importance of Breakfast
Breakfast has often been described as the most important meal of the day; both children preparing for a hard day at school and busy parents going to work and looking after the kids need to start the day with the right ‘fuel’ to keep them going.
