How To Make A Warm And Welcoming Baby Nursery

The arrival of a new baby is an exciting time and if you are a budding interior designer or even a DIY novice you’ll want to create a chic yet affordable nursery for your baby. Baby’s first nursery is an important environment which should provide a calm and relaxing setting, but also reflect mum’s taste.

With these quick and simple tips from Bosch Power Tools and celebrity interior designer Jo Hamilton, you can add your own creative touch to a designer nursery to give your little one a designer start in life.

Stretch The Space With Stripes

The nursery is often one of the smallest rooms in the house, so it’s good to build your design around a scheme that will make the area feel as large as possible.

Horizontal stripes will visually broaden the room and can be used to great effect on a narrow end wall. Keeping the colours pale will also help provide a feeling of openness, so pick out three or four pale shades that work really well together. For a neutral look go for a lemon yellow. Use the colours in a selection of different widths to create a beautiful and unique feature wall - the Bosch Quigo will ensure that all stripes are perfectly straight.

Make Baby The Star of The Show

Studies have shown that being surrounded by pictures of themselves builds a baby’s self esteem, so make sure to place pictures of them around the home. There are some really fun ways of doing this; one of the best is through wall art. Wall art is wallpaper created from a single image printed onto a wallpaper material in any size you choose.

Simply send off a high-resolution image to a printing company (there are many available on the internet) and they will send it back to you as a square of wallpaper. Make sure you select an image or collection of images of your baby laughing, playing with a ball, or just having fun, it will work best on a white background. Once the material has been created, you can simply paste it onto the wall using the Quigo to line up each image with ease.

Reinvent A Designer Dresser

An open doored dresser can make a stunning focal point for a nursery. The key is to find a piece with a romantic feel, so carved wooden, decorative details are a must. Look for a piece of furniture with the right shape and with plenty of character.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a stylish, designer look - there’s nothing more satisfying than hunting out an old furniture piece and turning it into something really special! There are plenty of places to find a bargain such as car boot sales and antique fairs and don’t forget the internet.

Once the piece has been fully prepped, add as many shelves as you think you’ll need – you can use your Quigo to line them up. Apply a couple of coats of white, water-based eggshell paint to the exterior - water-based paints are safe for your baby and eggshell is relatively hard wearing. Finally, the interior can be painted with a colour to tie in with your nursery – baby pink, apple green or powder blue all work perfectly.

Create A Calming Colour Palette

Different colours trigger different emotional responses and evoke particular feelings within us. Never is this a more important consideration than in a nursery. Think about the feel you want your baby’s room to have – cool tones, blues and greens, will give a restful, calm feel and warmer tones, pinks, oranges and yellows will provide a more vibrant, lively atmosphere.

When you’ve settled on the right colour for your baby, get the paint brushes out. To create a simple yet effective feature wall, mix varying shades from the original colour, using white paint in different quantities. Hunt out a variety of unusual typefaces on the web, being careful to choose fonts with plenty of character. Paint the letters of your child’s name in random typefaces, sizes and shades – use the Quigo to make sure they are straight. You could just paint the name once, or you could cover the wall completely, using verticals and horizontals.

Sticker Your Way To Success

Oversized wall stickers are a great way to transform a room in a matter of minutes. They are ideal for use in a nursery because they are as easy to take down as they are to put up, allowing the room to evolve as the child grows, without the need to redecorate.

There are some great companies offering really beautiful designs and it’s worth hunting around for something special! Choose a supplier who provides good quality, matt vinyl stickers as glossy finishes can look tacky. I recently used a series of four, five and six foot flowers in a baby girl’s room and it looked absolutely glorious! The Quigo is ideal for lining them up.

The Bosch Quigo automatically levels itself to provide easy to follow horizontal and vertical red lasers so you never have to worry about wonky lines. It could not be easier to use! Whether you are hanging your pictures in a row or getting to grips with wall stencils, effortlessly line up your project using the Bosch Quigo to guarantee professional results.

The Bosch Quigo Self-Levelling Cross-Line Laser Level is available from www.amazon.co.uk with a recommended retail price of £49.99. It comes complete with a fixing clamp and two batteries. The Quigo is supplied in a stylish metal gift tin making it the perfect present for any aspiring interior designer.
