Being Pregnant and
Wearing Contact Lenses

When you are pregnant your body will go through many changes. Not only will your body mass index (BMI) increase, your feet and eyes might also swell. If your eyes were to thicken during the pregnancy you could experience a few problems with wearing contact lenses. None of these changes are usually dangerous, but it is still good to be prepared.

The reason why your eyes can change shape is because hormonal spikes can cause fluctuations in your body fluids and blood pressure. The swelling of the eyes, or more precisely the cornea, will not actually be visible, but as mentioned it can cause problems for people wearing contacts. For example, because of this corneal thickening, your contacts will feel increasingly uncomfortable to wear, even becoming so ill-fitting that they fall out, and your eyes might become dry and itchy. It is strongly advised to visit an eye doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.

When you have given birth, up to several months after, there is a good possibility that the eyes return to their original shape. However, in the mean time, the eye doctor could prescribe you a set of temporary lenses that will be custom-fitted to the eyes while in their thickened state. It is a good idea to visit an eye doctor at least two to three times during your pregnancy, if you experience any discomfort or irregularities in your vision.

There will be two ways of correcting your vision if your eyes were to change their shape.

Get new contacts

The first alternative is the one that we have already mentioned: get a new set of custom-fitted contact lenses. You will actually be able to use these lenses for another couple of months after your pregnancy, as your eyes will take some time to return to their original shape.

Get glasses

The other alternative involves simply switching to wearing glasses during your nine months of pregnancy. Your local optician can help you find glasses with the right optical power to suit your vision. This option is probably the cheapest in the long run, but those of you who are used to wearing contacts might not be keen on this idea.

Whichever choice you make, please do visit an eye doctor if you experience any discomfort or blurred vision. While these symptoms are usually harmless, they could be induced by pregnancy-related hypertension, meaning that a visit to your doctor is essential.
