Top Tips For Energy Saving
How parents can get their children involved in energy saving
29th May 2008
The future of the planet is a major concern for people in the UK – but many parents feel they are not well enough informed to do their bit for the environment.
New research from Worcester, Bosch Group (leading manufacturer of sustainable high efficiency heating and hot water solutions) has found that almost 70% of Britons are calling for more education when it comes to things like saving energy, with the majority (85%) expecting the Government to keep us informed. One in five of us are even in favour of fining people who don’t use green methods.
For those who do go green, using energy efficient light bulbs and loft insulation are among the most popular ways. Just over half of people (53%) turn their washing machine to 30 degrees, a quarter use more public transport while 18% have installed a condensing boiler to green up. Meanwhile, 66% think their home is the most important place to be green, with work and day-to-day travel close behind.
Top Tips For Keeping Your Family Green
- Teach them to dress for the season - in winter wear jumpers not t-shirts
- Get them involved in recycling - get them to makea poster/leaflet of what they can recycle and consider giving them a recycling bin for their room
- Get a real time energy monitor, a device with a display that shows how much electricity you're consuming. Kids can carry it around the home, turning things off to see how much energy they can save: OWL, Efergymeter, Watt Son
- Use 'real' reusable nappies instead of disposable - as well as reducing landfill it will work out cheaper
- Encourage kids to turn things off - from lights to electrical appliances such as games consoles. You could even make this into a game with rewards fro tuning things off
- Teach them to cycle and give them the independence to travel further without the need for a car
- Club together with other parents and operate a car share scheme for regular hobbies such as clubs
