Sarah Brown Boosting Labour’s Chances Among New Mums

25th February 2010

Labour has a lead in the polls......among pregnant women and new mums. Sarah Brown is getting a higher endorsement than her husband and could help secure the vote of young families at the next election.

In a recent poll of 324 mums and pregnant women, 43% said they would vote Labour at the next election with 33% Conservative and 15% Liberal Democrat.

The survey by WilkinetBabyCarrier.com found that despite Gordon Brown’s recent interview on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, he is not the main reason for mums’ endorsement of the party. 44% felt David Cameron would make the best Prime Minister compared to Gordon Brown’s 38% approval rating.

Sarah Brown by contrast has a clear lead as the most popular wife in politics. When asked which of the main party leaders wives they admired the most, UK parents were clearly in support of the Prime Minister’s wife with Mrs Brown gaining 60% of the vote compared to Samantha Cameron’s 33%

Mrs Brown is gaining an increasingly favourable profile among mums after a recent successful webchat on Mumsnet which went on to gain widespread media coverage. She also has over 1 million followers on Twitter as @SarahBrown10.  She tweets about life at Number 10 and charity Million Mums which raises awareness of pregnancy in the third world.

Gideon Wilkins from WilkinetBabyCarrier.com said “While many new parents may well be planning to vote for Labour having just discovered the delights of Child Tax Credits, Mrs Brown also seems to be helping perceptions of the party by being the warm and approachable face of Labour.”

Labour Party officials may well be wishing they could replicate this voting intention across the whole electorate. A vote for Labour of 43% would deliver a healthy majority of 136 seats at the final count.

Voting however could be the last thing on a busy new mum’s mind with all their other demands. Nearly 1 in 4 mums said they would not vote or were undecided. Some clearly had a low opinion of today’s political leaders. When asked who would make the best party leader, one mum said “Someone who knows what they are doing would be a start” and another scathed: “They are all scallywags and rogues!” Some parents even went as far as suggesting their preferred alternatives with Ali G, Jonathon Ross and ‘A trained monkey’ all getting proposed as possible candidates.

Gideon Wilkins said, “Election day is a perfect excuse to put your baby in a baby carrier and head off for a nice walk with your baby. You can avoid the awkward steps and narrow doors of town halls that make pushchair access tricky and take your baby into the booth with you to give them an early appreciation of their right to vote!”
