Dads Have Problems Spending
‘Quality Time’ With Their Kids

10th July 2008

A new survey carried out on behalf of the Department of Children Schools and Families has shown that many fathers have problems with spending quality time with their children. The survey, carried out between 27th May to 3rd June was of 1500 dads and 500 children.

The survey of dads revealed that three quarters of dads (75%) spend less than 2 hours of quality time a day with their children and one in five (20%) spend less than half a day a week with them. 85% of dads believe that their children would like more of their time and 52% feel second rate compared to their child's mother, who they feel is the best person to talk to their children about their problems.

The children's survey showed that 55% of children wanted to spend more time with their dad, indeed 39% said they would rather play with their dad than a computer game or their friends.

70% of dads have never asked for advice on how to talk to or spend time with their kids and 38% wouldn't know who to ask if they did want help. But there are many services available to help dads with friendly, non-judgemental advice and information including more advice and real-life dads' top tips on spending happy time with your children.

My Son Lacks Confidence
Q: Our son will soon be 6, he appears to completely lack confidence. He will not go to parties, unless me or his dad are there, even if it’s a party with his school friends. He is really good at football and we thought it would be a good idea if he joined the local football team. We have been taking him along and he will not join in at all, even though he knows some of the other children there. When he is in a comfortable environment he appears over confident. Can you help?

Motivating Your Child
Can the motivation techniques used in business and sport be applied to children? This is the question explored by Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer in her book ‘Motivating Your Child’. Offering advice on giving their children encouragement to succeed at school and in life generally, this book discusses different motivational styles, and everyday problems such as managing homework, peer pressure, stress and lack of confidence.
