British Kids Are A Generation Of Eco Warriors
12th October 2009
A new survey of 6 to 12 year olds shows that young people are a new generation of eco-warriors; highly aware of climate change and determined to do something about it.
An overwhelming 83% of children surveyed say they regularly do things to save the planet; 8 out of 10 recycle, three quarters switch lights off when they leave a room and most do other things like turning off the tap when they brush their teeth, pick up litter and try to limit using plastic bags.
Over one thousand kids were questioned in the survey, which was commissioned by Random House Children’s Books to mark publication of The White Horse Trick by Kate Thompson. In the book, climate change has ruined the planet bringing extreme storms, famine and disease and the characters struggle to survive.
Kate, who was awarded both the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and the Whitbread Children's Book Award in 2005 for 'The New Policeman', is passionate about helping the environment and studied climate change for three months to research the book.
The survey also found a genuine worry amongst young people: just over 80% say they are worried about the future of our planet. Kate Thompson comments: “It’s appalling that we have arrived at a situation where more than 80% of our children are anxious about their future on the planet.”
73% of kids believe we should be using more energy from renewable sources, like wind and solar energy.
When asked what aspect of climate change worries them most, 36% answered animal species dying; 22% said rising sea levels; and others answered the risk of drought and extreme weather, losing rainforests and famine.
Some creative suggestions were also made for a law that children would pass to help the environment.
- "I would limit electricity and water for every household, including Buckingham Palace."
- "A day every year where all roads are closed so people have to walk."
- "To watch TV you have to peddle on a cycling machine; for every 10 minutes you cycle you get one hour on the TV!"
