Black Hole In Children's Knowledge

Children can't name the planets, but do believe in extra-terrestrials

3rd February 2010

Children’s knowledge of outer space is seriously lacking, according to a survey commissioned to mark today’s DVD and Blu-ray release of Aliens in the Attic. The poll of 1,000 5-16 year olds was assessed their understanding of and views on space and extraterrestrial life. A staggering 95% of children were unable to name all eight planets, with two thirds of those questioned feeling they aren’t taught enough about space in school.

Poor knowledge of the solar system isn’t restricted to younger children, with 94% of 16 year olds unable to name all eight planets compared to a very similar 95% of children 11 years younger. Despite their lack of knowledge on the subject, children of all ages admitted being fascinated by everything extraterrestrial with a huge 75% sharing the belief that alien life exists and 72% believing they would be peaceful beings.

Whilst belief in beings such as Father Christmas and fairies dropped off with age, aliens and ghosts continued to top the list of entities that children believed in. 21% of 16 year olds supported the existence of aliens compared to the 7% that still believed in Santa.

Annoying classmates are the people children would most like to banish to the other side of the Milky Way (35%) compared to just 15% who would choose to send their sibling to a Galaxy far, far away. The survey also revealed that children are convinced aliens walk among us with an astonishing 34% adamant that one of their teachers was really an alien.

The study also showed that children would like to visit outer space if they had the chance, with a quarter eager to visit other planets. 22% cited meeting aliens as their reason to venture into the cosmos whilst 40% also stated that a spaceship was their dream mode of transportation.

The survey was commissioned by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to celebrate the release of Aliens in the Attic on DVD and Blu-ray from the 1st February 2010. The film follows the Pearson family as their snooze-fest holiday turns into the adventure of a lifetime when feisty green aliens crash-land on the roof of their isolated holiday home.

Aliens in the Attic is available from Amazon.co.uk, Play.com and Amazon.com
