Tweet NSPCC Support Release Of 'The Kid'15th September 2010 The NSPCC is supporting the Sept 17 2010 UK release of The Kid – the gritty, uplifting screen version of Kevin Lewis's bestselling memoir, which chronicles how he was neglected and physically abused by his parents, but overcame this to live a happy and fulfilled life. Kevin’s life is not his own. Beaten and starved by his parents, and bullied at school, he lives an invisible life. But, at least for a while, that changes thanks to Kevin’s teacher, Colin. Colin calls social services to report his concerns for Kevin’s welfare – and in doing so alters the course of his life. The Kid is directed by Nick Moran (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels) and stars Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show and Solaris) and Rupert Friend (Pride and Prejudice, The Young Victoria). You can watch the trailer for the movie here. To find out more about The Kid visit www.thekidthefilm.com For adults worried about a child you can get in touch with the NSPCC Helpline free and anonymously on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.org.uk. The Helpline launched in 1991. Between April 2009 and March 2010 the service received 30,420 child welfare contacts, 11, 957 of those were referred on to social services or the police. Anyone can contact the NSPCC Helpline service free and anonymously 365 days a year, 24/7, to report any worries or concerns about a child being badly treated. The Helpline can give advice on what action callers could take to help a child in future, such as warning signs to look out for and how to get support for their parents or carers. If callers provide identifying information about a child and the NSPCC believes that child is at risk, the Helpline advisor will work with the police or children's services to ensure that child is protected.
