Home Alone Named Britain's
Favourite Festive Family Film

15th December 2008

Home Alone has been named as the nation’s favourite family festive film by a new survey which also reveals that the average British family has viewed the Oscar nominated movie starring the ten year old Macaulay Culkin a whopping ten times and counting!

More than 3,000 parents took part in the survey which asked participants to select their favourite festive movies to celebrate the launch of the new premium family movie channel Disney Cinemagic HD. Respondents were asked to choose their films from a shortlist compiled by a panel of media and TV experts and the findings provide a unique insight into the nation’s viewing habits over the yuletide season.

Home Alone scored top marks with British families thanks to its ‘feel good’ storyline and association with the festive season. Other classic big screen gems which rated highly in the research include the 1982 animated tale of The Snowman and Disney's 1964 musical Mary Poppins whose Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious adventures have made it a seasonal classic.

When it comes to the nation’s favourite animated movies of all time, Disney dominated the list with six out of the top ten movies including Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Lion King, Monsters, Inc., 101 Dalmations and Bambi whilst Shrek took the top spot.

The findings of the Disney Cinemagic HD survey also reveal that settling down to watch a festive movie as a family is considered an integral part of Christmas for 30% of Brits. Families tend to watch an average of three movies together during the yuletide season and nearly half (43%) cite this as one of the most relaxing times spent in an otherwise busy and chaotic few days of entertaining family, friends and children. In fact, 28% say that 3-4pm is the most relaxed part of Christmas day as it’s the first opportunity they get to sit down to see their first film together.

As for modern day films that look set to become festive family classics in years to come, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl all make it into the top five.

Despite Britons being well known for keeping a stiff upper lip, the study reveals that six in ten (62%) British mums fully expect to shed a tear or two as they watch their favourite festive movies followed by 18% of their children. While most parents agree on what constitutes a family film, given the choice, 19% of fathers would opt for the more high-octane adult festive action of Die Hard.

Michael Cairns, Disney Cinemagic HD General Manager says, “Christmas is synonymous with great family entertainment. Festive films serve to bring families closer together and provide parents with some much needed time off. Disney Cinemagic’s HD Channel has a schedule full of great family films this Christmas beginning with Ratatouille and Tinkerbell followed by Sleeping Beauty and The Incredibles in the New Year – now all in HD”.

Disney Cinemagic is the first place on television to see the latest Disney and Disney/Pixar animated movies alongside classic Disney movies and series. The new channel will broadcast the majority in native HD including Ratatouille and Tinkerbell. Disney Cinemagic is available through Sky+ HD to customers who take a Sky Movies subscription.
