Children Discover
A World Of Film At FILMCLUB

After-school initiative FILMCLUB launches two ‘Film Journeys’seasons as part of new campaign

17th May 2010

A generation of children are set to be taken on a thrilling journey of discovery from South Africa to the majestic Mongolian plains thanks to FILMCLUB’s ambitious new campaign.

Founded by film director Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones’ Diary: The Edge Of Reason) and educationalist and journalist Lindsay Mackie, FILMCLUB is a network of exciting after-school clubs (3,487 as of 1st March 2009) which offers children free weekly access to thousands of classic and popular films, as well as to film industry news, screenings and talent.

The nationwide after-school initiative’s ‘Film Journeys’ campaign includes two diverse and far-reaching film seasons featuring truly great films from around the world, along with brand new materials for teachers to promote adventurous journeys through film. With 85,000 children currently watching great movies with FILMCLUB every week, that's a lot of films and an awful lot of dreams,” as legendary film director Sir Alan Parker (Bugsy Malone, The Commitments) put it.

The seasons, split into films suitable for Primary and Secondary children, include titles from the world beyond Hollywood – everything from a Russian folk tale to a Japanese film noir – and have been curated with the aim of opening children’s eyes to cultures, ideas, people and places that they may not normally encounter. There are films in 21 different languages on the FILMCLUB catalogue, meaning that it is genuinely a vital window on the world.

The new Film Journeys seasons – which include two of FILMCLUB members’ most popular foreign films, Mongolian drama The Cave of the Yellow Dog and French tale of unusual friendship, The Fox and the Child - are as follows:

Children All Over The World (Primary)

Duma (U, South Africa)

Supported by top film talent and education professionals, FILMCLUB provides an inclusive, nurturing environment in which children find a voice, discuss, debate and explore.
