Track Down A Tree - In Warm Knitted Scarf!
This winter is the first official Winter Tree Hunting Season, the Woodland Trust has announced. If that sounds a bit chilly, don’t panic – the Trust’s Ancient Tree Hunt team has also come up with a su’purl’ative (groan) way of tracking down these stalwarts of nature while looking good and keeping warm – through KNITTING!
Monday 1 December is the start of Winter Tree Hunting season and the day when this winter’s most ingenious woolly accessory is launched. It’s a free designer knitting pattern for a scarf that doubles up as an ancient tree measuring device.
Ancient trees become fatter and more wrinkly as they age, so the fattest and most squat trees are likely to be the oldest ones. The Woodland Trust has recognised the importance of these historical giants in the landscape and so is running the Ancient Tree Hunt, a five-year project to record all the ancient trees in the UK. Its website, www.AncientTreeHunt.org.uk already lists 20,000 ancients around the UK logged by members of the public over the past 18 months. Now, the Ancient Tree Hunt team is urging the public to find the rest – estimated to be around 80,000 all over the country – in parks and gardens, by roadsides and along lanes and footpaths.
The Winter Warmer Ancient Tree Hunting scarf measures exactly 1.5 metres in length, the same size as a British Standard Hug. This measurement is officially recognised by the Ancient Tree Hunt team as an easy way to measure the girth of trees, because a fat girth is one of several indicators of age.
Winter Tree Hunting season starts in December and continues through Christmas and the New Year to the end of February, so there’s plenty of time to get knitting and get out Ancient Tree Hunting with the scarf before winter ends and the trees get their spring leaves.
“Sign up for the Ancient Tree Hunt on the website and show us your favourite ancient trees, dressed for winter!” said Nikki.
The scarves – together with a handy pair of mittens which can also be used for measuring – have been designed by British knitwear designer Laura Long. To download this winter’s tree-mendously trendy designer knitting pattern, go to the Winter Tree Hunting Scarf Pattern
