Knit 2 TogetherWant to take your knitting to another level? Are you looking for inspiration or a new direction? Then a visit to the Craft Council’s current exhibition, Knit 2 Together is an absolute must. It is an exhibition of the latest in innovative knitting design – but not for sweaters or hats. This is knitting as sculpture, knitting as Art, knitting to explore all the possibilities of knitting. The exhibition showcases the work of a number of experimental knitters. Using both hand and machine techniques they have produced a diverse range of works in materials such as paper and human hair as well as wool or man-made yarns. Jacket for a migrating bird by Marie-Rose Lortet shows a beautiful, if completely impractical, garment for a bird’s flight south for the winter. This is one of the few wearable items in the exhibition. ‘Knit Chatlines’ by Kelly Jenkins is a floor to ceiling wall hanging, knitted with mock advertisements for chatlines to cater for every type of knitter!! Another has a problem page with knitting related problems. The hangings are funny and rude and you will laugh out loud at them. ‘Picknit’ by Donna Wilson is a collection of machine knitted alien creatures, eating a picnic of knitted food. Despite their unusual number of arms, legs and eyes, they are really cute, and everyone at the exhibition the day I went wanted a cuddle! There are chances to join in and leave your mark on the exhibition, with a giant French Knitting dolly and an area to write down your first knitting memories. Entry to the exhibition is completely free, and it is a must-see for any enthusiastic knitter, and any textiles student. If you are studying for your GCSE, A-level or a higher qualification in textiles, a visit to the Craft Council is a must. You will be startled at what can be produced by just a pair of needles and a ball of wool. The Craft Council is at:- 44a Pentonville Road, Knit 2 Together ran until 8th of May 2005.
