Burns Or Scalds On Children

More than a hundred children and young people attend accident and emergency units every day with a burn or scald injury. This number increases dramatically in the four weeks around bonfire night.

Tesco Baby & Toddler Club BabySafe campaign have got together with experts from the British Red Cross to produce a video that tells parents what to do in case they find themselves in such a situation.

The advice includes:

  • Run the area under cool water for at least 10 minutes.
  • Remove water from an injured area unless the material is sticking to the skin.
  • Don’t apply cream, ointments, grease, antiseptic spray or plasters.
  • Loosely cover burns with a non fluffy material – cling film is ideal.

This is one of a series of videos produced as part of the fifth Tesco Baby & Toddler Club BabySafe campaign – an initiative to offer free, basic first aid training to parents, grandparents and carers.

The British Red Cross enables vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives. For more information visit www.redcross.org.uk.
