Great Excuses
to Throw a Party

Do you love to organise parties for your kids, but there just aren’t enough reasons throughout the year? Maybe birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas just don’t give you enough opportunities to make a cake and hang out the bunting. Here are some ideas for things to celebrate, whether you want to invite a whole group of kids, the family or just make tea-time a bit special.

If, as my in family, all the birthdays are clustered near Christmas, you need to nominate an official birthday, just like the Queen. Choose a day when the weather has a good chance of being fine – you could for example have a ‘none of us have a birthday in summer’ barbeque.

In her book Domestic Bliss, Rita Konig suggests having a party for the first day of autumn. Well, it is a long time ‘till Christmas and there are no more Bank Holidays to look forward to…..

If you have pets you should always celebrate their birthdays. No idea when they were born? Choose a time when not much else is happening, but do remember to note the date – otherwise you run the risk of a child piping up ‘but last year wasn’t Fluffy’s birthday a week before Grandma’s?’

Firsts are always good, first tooth lost, first day at school or playgroup, first blossom on the trees, first cuckoo of spring……...

In Japan, 3rd of March is Girl’s Day, which is celebrated by decorating the house with dolls and peach blossom. The 5 th of May is called Children’s Day but really celebrates boys, by flying carp windsocks from the house, one for each boy in the family.

International Children’s Day is held on or around 1st of June. It was started by World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in 1925, and has been celebrated to varying degrees since then. Note that this is nothing to do with ‘World Children’s Day’ which is a creation of the McDonalds Corporation to raise funds for their own charitable foundation.

If the going gets tough you could have a party to celebrate TV Turn-off Week. (Date varies, usually at the end of April.)

If you know the date of a favourite book character’s birthday you could have party for them. For example, July 31 st is Harry Potter’s Birthday, so you could have a Harry Potter themed party with costumes and games.
