Splat Cooking –
Encouraging Kids to Get Cooking
It was a request from her daughter for a cooking party for her 5th Birthday Party that set Beverley Glock on the road to forming Splat Cooking, a Buckinghamshire-based business providing cooking parties and funky cooking equipment.
Beverley Glock
Her daughter loved cooking and baking and wanted to make her own lunch with her friends on her birthday. Unable to find someone outside London to come and run the party, Beverley decided to do it herself. The party was a great success, far less messy than anticipated and all 12 children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. And so Splat was born……….
Splat will come to your venue and run the party for you, bringing all the ingredients and utensils. They also offer kits so that you can run the party yourself. The kit includes a “How to run a cooking party and stay sane” guide with step-by-step instructions from sending out the invitations, recruiting helpers, organising the children to running the party and packing the party bags.
In addition to cooking parties, Splat runs a number of school-based cooking clubs. Recently Splat were called in by a local school to put together a workshop to celebrate achieving a Healthy Schools award. The children tasted lots of different raw and cooked vegetables and discussed where the vegetables come from and how they grow. Then for hands-on experience every child made a cheesy pizza with vegetable toppings which they took home with a recipe card.
Splat also provides specialist workshops for children and grown ups. For example, they run a Summer Baking Workshop at the local Pick Your Own Farm so the children can pick the fruit and vegetables then clean, prepare and cook them at the workshop. This helps them to realise where fruit and vegetables really come from, rather than it being clean and shiny off the shelf of the local supermarket!
They also have a thriving on-line business selling a large range of funky cookie cutters, sprinkles, and cake cases. These are mostly sourced and imported from small independent manufacturers or made to their own specification and design and manufactured in the UK. Splat's cookie cutters have been featured in Nigella Lawson's book “Feast” and Peggy Porschen's book “Pretty Party Cakes” and the cake cases in Fergal Connolly's book “500 Cupcakes and Muffins”. Splat are now exporting products all over the world, including back to the US where they are made in the first place.

A new range of cooking kits has just been launched aimed at encouraging children to get into the kitchen and start cooking. Ideal for stocking fillers, gifts or just something to do during weekends, school holidays or rainy days they include small cookie making kits with the themes for everybody - rocket, dinosaur, fantasy, fairy and of course seasonal kits for Easter, Halloween and Christmas; larger kits include a chef's apron and hat, rolling pin, cookie cutters, cake cases, sprinkles and glitter and a recipe card.
And why should kids have all the fun? There are also Cooking Kits for Grown Ups in a pink drawstring bag with a fluffy shoe and a white drawstring bag with frilly knickers on the front!
