Back To School Teatime Meals

From Uncle Ben's

When the kids come charging through the door bursting with classroom tales and hungry for their tea, you want something that is tasty, wholesome and quick to cook.

Nutritionist and mum of one, Juliette Kellow says "Even if you’ve seen the school meal menu or made a healthy packed lunch, it’s still difficult to know exactly what the children have eaten at school. Therefore, teatime is crucial for providing children with a healthy, nutritious meal that’s packed with wholesome ingredients – but still tastes great. Fortunately, providing a balanced meal that the kids will sit down and enjoy is simple enough to do."

Uncle Ben’s has created six nutritious after school meals:-

On behalf of Uncle Ben's Sauce, nutritionist Juliette Kellow also offers some back to school advice:

  1. Make teatime fun. Getting everyone around the table for tea gives the family the chance to catch up. In fact, studies have shown that children who frequently enjoy teatimes like this are likely to get better grades at school*.
  2. Combine fresh with convenience. In between collecting children from school and extracurricular activities, most mums simply don’t have the time to create elaborate teatime meals. That’s where combining some fresh ingredients with healthier convenience foods, like jars of ready-made sauces, provides the perfect solution. All Uncle Ben’s sauces already contain wholesome vegetables such as Chilli con Carne with its kidney beans, red peppers, tomato, onion and pinto beans. Plus, all sauces are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, but feel free to add the kids’ favourite vegetables as additional goodness!
  3. Fill them up…healthily. Once back running around the playground at break times, children will use up a lot of energy and after a long day they’ll be hungry. The perfect teatime plate should contain starchy carbs such as rice, lean meat and a couple of servings of veggies to fill them up and boost essential fibre and vital vitamins.
  4. Teatime education! Getting kid’s involved in helping to make tea, provides them with cookery skills they’ll use for life. Serving up meals that are typical to other parts of the world such as Chilli con Carne or curry gives you the chance to talk to them about different cultures and countries which they can then take back to the classroom.

So mums, you can concentrate on sewing names into blazers, swotting up for homework duty and making sure the kids have their PE kits ready, because Uncle Ben's has got nutritious after school teatimes sorted!

All Uncle Ben’s sauces include real, wholesome ingredients and contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Uncle Ben’s sauces are packed with chunky vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, bamboo shoots, peppers and onions. For further information and more fantastic recipes visit www.unclebens.co.uk
