The UK’s Top 5 Before-Breakfast Walks
We’ve well and truly waved goodbye to the winter months and summer is fast approaching. With the lovely longer evenings come darker mornings, but with energetic children in tow this doesn’t allow the option to snooze for longer. If you can muster up the energy to get dressed bright and early, grab the kids wellies, don your walking boots and go for a walk, you’ll witness beautiful sunrises, fresh spring dew and Mother Nature waking up all around you. Not only might the children learn something new but it’s actually great for their health and well-being. If you need some inspiration, the Hi-Tec community has teamed up with the National Trust to recommend five top early morning walks…
Ashridge Court, Hertfordshire
The Ashridge Estate sits on the main ridge of the wonderful Chiltern Hills in Hertfordshire. There are over 2000 hectares of open countryside, chalk downland and woodland to explore and escape.
Locals recommend walking through the grounds as there’s always something different to spot in the early morning- be it wildflowers, sheep, deer or woodpeckers.
Bob Davis is Forester-in-charge at Ashridge and says, ‘You will find many fine trees on this walk including beech, oak and sycamores that have self-set. It’s hard to imagine that before the storm of 1990 this would have been a dark area dominated by beech!’
The walk is linear and pretty flat so it makes for a nice early morning stroll. There’s a Post Office in North Tawton where you can stop and pick up your newspapers just in-time for breakfast too!
Stourhead, Wiltshire
While this walk is truly beautiful, it’s the Stourhead Farm Shop which makes it such an ideal early morning route! Imagine walking up an appetite which and satisfying it with fresh fruit, free range eggs and freshly baked bread when the shop opens at 10am.
The Park Hill Camp Walk leads through magnificent woodland dotted with bluebells and other wildflowers and passes an Iron Age fort and medieval deer park before taking you through Stourhead’s renowned gardens and onto the Farm Shop.
Ullswater, the Lake District
Often cited as the most beautiful of all The Lakes, Ullswater in the early morning is a sight to behold. The calmness and quietness of the water ought to clear your mind perfectly for the day ahead, especially as you’ll likely miss any adventurers getting out on the water later in the day.
Start from Pooley Bridge and follow the signs for a not-too-strenuous walk which will take you along the lake shore.
Roseberry Topping, Yorkshire
The Yorkshire Moors are a perfect place to start the day- especially if you’re there early enough to catch the sun rise over the Roseberry Topping. The hill is unmistakeable thanks to its oddly-shaped peak, and while it’s not one of the highest hills around, getting up to the top will certainly clear your airways- setting you up nicely for the day ahead.
Start by following the Cleveland Way and then follow the path by the Great Ayton Moor – you’ll get fantastic views of Roseberry which should inspire you to carry on to the top.
Marloes Peninsular, Pembrokeshire
If you’re a nature-lover, this walk is bound to put an early-morning smile on your face. Head up to Wooltack Point where you should be able to spot razorbills, guillemots and puffins, all fishing for their own breakfast. Or, stop at the benches on the cliffs above the Deer park beaches and you could spot one of the 50 or so Atlantic grey seal pups which are born around the Peninsular each year.
Plus, the sight of the sun coming up across the Irish sea will take your breath away!
