History Isn’t So…Horrible!

12th July 2009

New research reveals that over half of the nation’s children (54%) feel they do not know enough about their country’s history and despite traditional stereotypes, nine out of ten (91%) kids highly value England’s rich history and are thirsty to learn more.

The survey, commissioned by English Heritage to mark the launch of its new summer events club, ‘Time Travellers Go’, shows that today’s children want to learn about history in a fun and engaging way: 59% of children said they would prefer to learn about England’s history by visiting historically themed events where they can experience the past being bought to life.

Terry Deary, author of Horrible Histories said, “Kids love to learn about history’s gruesome tales and quirky characters and it is important that we encourage this passion. History is such a fascinating subject, but can lose its appeal if delivered in a dull, lifeless way - with over 2,000 years of history to learn from there really is something to captivate every child.”

The research has also provided a fascinating insight into children’s historical likes and dislikes. Today’s kids would most like to return to Tudor times while their most favoured historical job is that of a Prince or Princess. Henry VIII’s “cut throat” antics won the majority of boys over as he was voted their favourite historical character, meanwhile it was Florence Nightingale’s healing nature which impressed the girls.

To entice children to learn more about history, English Heritage have launched a new, exciting initiative, ‘Time Travellers Go’ club which allows children of all ages to venture into the past and take on some of history’s greatest roles. Deary continues, “This is a unique twist on a kid’s summer school; it offers a wide range of activities that span 2,000 years of history and is ideal for any child who has ever wanted to ‘travel back in time’ and discover England’s intriguing history. These hands-on history events include everything from ‘Knights Academy’, ‘Crime and Punishment’ to ‘Secrets & Spies’, where children can discover history in a truly memorable way.”

All new Time Travellers are presented with their very own passport to the past and awarded a sticker at each event attended. Once the passport is full, they’ll receive a special Time Traveller reward for completing their training!
