I must admit I do have a bit of a fondness for sheep, so while on holiday in Devon, Bideford’s The Big Sheep was top of my list of places to visit. This sheep fan was not disappointed.
In beautiful North Devon this Sheep Theme park will give ewe a day out to remember. There is a programme of events held throughout the day which include bottle-feeding lambs and sheep shearing demonstrations. There are of course lots of opportunities to meet different breeds of sheep, and to cuddle the baby animals at pet’s corner.
If you like ‘One Man and His Dog’ you can enjoy the sheep show but you must not miss the duck trials, where ducks are also herded by a sheepdog. However the absolute highlight of the day is the sheep racing. The sheep have adorable little knitted jockeys attached to their backs, and then they race along a course while you cheer on your favourite. You can even place a bet on your fancied racer!
The attraction also includes Ewetopia, an indoor playground for children and adults alike with a restaurant and seating area. A new addition is Laser Games, suitable for 8 years and over.
The Big Sheep is open all year round. It has a shop which sell items made from sheep’s milk (try the fudge) and the biggest collection of sheep paraphernalia you will see anywhere. There are farmer’s markets held close to Christmas and some special events for Halloween - check the website for details.
This is a great fun day out for kids, especially animal lovers and for sheep fans it is pure heaven – ewe will baarely want to leave so don’t be sheepish, pay them a visit!
