Butterflies Take Flight at RHS Garden Wisley
For the first time in RHS Garden Wisley’s 106 year history, thousands of colourful, tropical butterflies will take to the air
during Butterflies in the Glasshouse, from 18 January until 22 February 2009.
This experience provides the unique opportunity to get close-up to 21 different species of tropical butterfly and enjoy Wisley’s own tropical plant collection. A heated home has been installed behind the scenes to house the majority of the pupae (plural term for chrysalis, the hard outer casing that a caterpillar forms whilst metamorphosis into a butterfly takes
place) before the butterflies emerge to take flight. Each morning, members of the Glasshouse team release the newly hatched beauties into their new home.
Definitely not to be missed are a series of impressive butterfly images by photographer Rakha Singh. Using revolutionary photographic techniques, the intricate details of butterflies are captured down to the finest scale and reproduced in this series
of stunning 4ftx4ft photographs to dramatic effect.
This would make a great day outfor half term, as families can take advantage of fun, butterfly-inspired art activity sheets for collection from the Art Cart throughout the duration of the experience.
RHS Garden Wisley is located in Woking, Surrey. Butterflies in The Glasshouse will be open from 10am–3.45pm daily (last entry 3.30pm). The experience is included with normal garden entry. Visit www.rhs.org.uk/wisley to find out more.

London Transport Museum On a cold January morning I set out with my five year old son on a trip to the newly refurbished London Transport Museum. It would prove to be well worth the long train journey and provide us with plenty to talk about through the cold winter days.
