Spend Your Summer
With Princess Poppy
Fans of the Princess Poppy books by Janey Louise Jones will be delighted to hear that there are new books out for the summer.
The latest tales in the beloved Princess Poppy series are The Baby Twins and Friends Together. In these beautifully illustrated picture books, aimed at children under 5, we see Poppy welcoming her new baby brother and sister, Archie and Angel, and making a new friend, Abigail.
In The Baby Twins, author and mum-of-three Janey Louise Jones says the subject of new babies was one she was keen to explore with Poppy, ‘Jealousy of the baby is strongest in the child under five years, because he is much more dependent on his parents and has fewer interests outside the family circle. Their entire life is, like Poppy’s, turned upside down but this can be eased by prepping children early on and involving them in the process. I hope parents can use the book as a tool to help in the transition.’

In Friends Together, we see Poppy make a new friend in Abigail. The story deals with Poppy’s pleasure at being invited to the opening party of a new music shop in the idyllic village of Honeypot Hill. The anticipation of the party combined with the heady thrill of a new friendship brings out the not so pleasant side in our little Princess. It is a side Janey Louise Jones believes is very natural, ‘almost all children go through stages where they are bordering on unpleasant but with the very young it is more a case of not knowing how to express very complicated emotions they may be experiencing. As adults we need to focus on what might be the cause of the behaviour rather than jump in with a telling off. Hopefully, drawing on how Poppy behaves may be a useful way of objectively explaining these traits to our little ones.’
Both books are beautifully illustrated, and start with a little envelope with a letter from Poppy, which includes a fun idea for something to make too! The Princess Poppy books continue to educate, entertain and enchant their readers with colourful characters, stimulating storylines and moral messages.
In addition to the two new picture books, June also marks the release of two Princess Poppy classics
Twinkletoes and Ballet Shoes in book and CD format, read by one of the UK’s most popular actresses, Tamzin Outhwaite.
There are two new new Princess Poppy Activity Books just published too, and with summer just around the corner, and many a holiday booked and paid for, anxious parents may now start to worry about how they are going to keep the little ones entertained on a four hour flight and without TV for a week! Traditional games such as Eye Spy are fine but interest can wane pretty quickly as there is little to see on a 747........
Puzzle and Play: A Sticker Activity Book and Petals and Picnics: A Make-and-Do Book are great for keeping little minds and fingers busy on the journey and once you arrive. These beautifully illustrated books are filled with the colourful characters from the Princess Poppy Picture Books and make a delightful holiday souvenir too.
