This book, published originally in 1995 has recently been published in a new 3rd edition. Rose Elliot is by one of the most respected vegetarian food writers in Britain, has written over 50 cookery books, is a patron of the Vegetarian Society and in 1999 was appointed MBE for services to vegetarian cookery.
There is something for everyone in this book, from helpful advice to tasty recipes: being a vegetarian is not a pre-requisite!
Split into two helpful parts, Part One “Nutrition and Babycare” shows how to create a well-balanced and varied vegetarian diet that gives you and your baby all the essential nutrients you need to be healthy.
Part Two of the book contains a tasty, nutritious recipe section to put all Rose’s good advice into practice!
This is more than just a book about cookery however, as it contains a large amount of practical advice on coping with pregnancy, breastfeeding and weaning from a food related viewpoint. When you are pregnant or have just had a baby, what you and baby are eating can become the biggest issue in your life. Then comes weaning, which many mothers find to be one of the most confusing areas, with conflicting advice from friends, health visitors and food manufacturers.
I picked this book up when I was weaning my eldest child, because as a non-vegetarian non-cook I had little experience of preparing vegetables, and was not feeling too confident. It gave me gave me lots of ideas on what to try my baby on once I’d got past carrot, swede and potato and I really appreciated the advice and suggestions for preparing vegetable based dishes.
The Mother, Toddler and Baby Book is written in a friendly mum-to-mum way and understands that feeding has to be integrated with all the other tasks that form that steep learning curve called motherhood. This beautifully illustrated book will be one you refer to time and again whether or not you are vegetarian, with simple, tasty recipes your children will really enjoy.
